Helen Looman | Mixed Media Artist

by Helen Looman

I was born and raised in the mountains of Colorado. Still, my life has taken me far beyond them—living on a sailboat in California, an apartment in New York City, a one-room log cabin in Idaho, several homes in the cities and mountains of Costa Rica, and even a ger in Outer Mongolia. Now I call Mancos home. I enjoy working with acrylics, pastels, ink, graphite, and watercolor, and over the years, I’ve created everything from large, full-room murals to tiny miniatures.

My spark was an amazing fourth-grade teacher. One day, she handed each of us a bar of soap and set us free—with knives! We were told to carve whatever we wanted, and I was instantly hooked. At a time when schools didn’t offer art classes, she invited me to stay in at recess, where she guided me in drawing, painting, and carving. Her encouragement lit the creative fire that’s been with me ever since.
