Jan Wright | Watercolor Artist

by Jan Wright

Southwest landscapes in watercolor have been my artistic passion for more than fifty years. Since moving to the Mancos area in 2008, I’ve exhibited throughout the Four Corners region, and my work can currently be found at Raven House Gallery, MoonDog Café, Berkshire Hathaway Realty Co. in Mancos, and Odd Cat Books in Dolores.

My spark came later in my watercolor journey. As a Mesa Verde volunteer, I had the opportunity to assist an archaeologist in lighting up Spruce Tree House for Luminaria Night in December 2012, shortly after completing my Artist-in-Residence there.

Lighting the lanterns deep within the alcove was astounding. Seeing ancient thumbprints pressed into the mortar between hand-hewn stone bricks transported me back in time. Realizing that families once ate, laughed, and slept in that very place absolutely blew my mind.

That magical night stayed with me, finding its way into the painting Luminaria Night Magic. It remains one of my most meaningful works—a reminder of the quiet connection between art, place, and history. Today, I continue to paint the light and landscapes of the Southwest, sharing that same sense of wonder through my work in local galleries and exhibitions across the region.
