Nancy M. Byers | Fused Glass Artist

by Nancy Byers

Art entered my life at fifty when I tried oil painting, which was okay. With my children grown and on their own, and with a twenty-year career as an airline pilot and a long marriage behind me, I moved to Durango for a change of scene. And that’s when art found me again.

This sidelight next to my front door was the spark that created a new art career I didn’t expect. When I first moved to Durango, I filled my time with archaeology, contract bridge, and other activities—but during the Covid shutdown, all of that went by the wayside. The fused glass studio Get Fused on Main Avenue was still open, so I took my idea to them. They talked me through the process of creating this sidelight that can be seen from both sides, and when I saw it completed, I was so awed by its beauty that it launched me into the art world that now fills my life.

My work can be found at Raven House Gallery in Mancos and in exhibitions throughout Durango and Cortez.
