"First Painting at 16 Years Old", Judy Morgan, Artist

Nature has always been my greatest inspiration. I first began painting and exhibiting marine scenes in Newport, Rhode Island, where I received first place in watercolor at the Newport Art Museum. In 1990, I appeared on Good Morning America, painting the lively chaos of the “Around the World Alone” sailboat race—a moment that captured both the energy of the sea and my love for painting movement.

When I moved west to Durango, Colorado, in 2008, the landscape shifted my palette. My oil painting, Sunset on the Animas, won two awards and was later featured on the Wine Dinner menus at the Silver Pick Resort. After many years exhibiting with the Plein Air Painters of the Four Corners, I eventually relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where I now paint the vivid light and texture of the Sonoran Desert. The San Francisco Street Gallery represents my work at 50 E—San Francisco Street in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

My spark for art began when I was about ten years old. My parents noticed my fascination with drawing and bought me the Draw with Me kit by Jon Nagy. Every Saturday morning, I’d pull out my set, tune in to Jon Nagy on television, and draw right along with him. Later came the Jon Nagy painting set—my first step into oil painting. In high school, I created my first oil painting with a palette knife. Those early mornings of sketching and painting lit a spark that still guides my hand today.
